Commonwealth aim for Bateson

Jack Bateson thinks the new generation of Great Britain amateur boxers are well equipped to emulate the gold medal greats who have gone before.

The 19-year-old Leeds light-flyweight was one of a number of top juniors who stepped up when the GB podium programme was predictably deserted by some of its biggest names in the wake of London 2012.

Bateson claimed a superb bronze medal on his major senior debut at the European Championships in Minsk in June, and is targeting another podium place at next month's World Championships in Kazakhstan.

Having watched from the stands as former team-mates Luke Campbell and Anthony Joshua struck gold in London, Bateson is also eager to experience the next best thing to home advantage at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow next year.

Bateson said: "I remember watching the likes of Thomas Stalker win gold medals in Delhi and he inspired me in the same way I hope I can inspire the younger generations to come through and achieve what they want.

"I boxed four times at the Commonwealth Youth Games and it was probably the best event I have experienced so far. Fighting so close to home in such a big competition would be a dream for me, but there is a lot more I want to accomplish first."

Bateson, who fights out of the same Burmantofts gym in Leeds city centre which also played a part in the rise to fame of Nicola Adams, has been named as one of a number of ambassadors for the Games by Commonwealth Games England.

And the domestic light-flyweight competition could prove to be one of the most competitive in Glasgow as it is likely to also include Welshman Ashley Williams and Northern Ireland's irrepressible two-time Olympic medallist Paddy Barnes.

Bateson added: "It's been a great year for me and winning bronze at the Europeans was a great achievement. I've been quite consistent from schoolboy level to seniors so it's a case of pushing on through the Worlds, the Commonwealths and then Rio.

"I have always believed in myself and while I was happy with a bronze in Minsk I really wanted to come home with gold. I'm looking at gold at the Worlds and the Commonwealths provided I am given the chance."

Great Britain's World Championship squad will be named next week. The World Championships take place in Almaty, Kazakhstan from October 11 to 27.
